Urban legends
In 1628 there was a huge lizard, which lived in a cave near of Magdalena spring. The lizard ate sheep; therefore the shepherds were terrified of being eaten. The neighborhood had been trying to get rid of the lizard without success.
Then a prisoner, who faced the death penalty, asked to fight against the lizard. It was a golden opportunity, so the neighborhood put up with the suggestion. He needed three things to win: a horse, loaves of bread and gunpowder.
When the dark night arrived, the prisoner went to the cave and left the loaves in a line. Suddenly the lizard woke up and started to eat, and in the same time the prisoner was throwing loaves the lizard was eating them. When the prisoner reached San Ildefonso Square he threw the gunpowder, so the lizard ate it and exploded.
This is the end
of the lizard of Jaen.
Nowadays there is a well-known phrase “ You will explode like the lizard of Jaen”
